Frequently Asked Questions

We understand that seeing a specialist for the first time can raise a lot of questions. Below are answers to the most common questions we receive. If your question isn’t covered here, please don’t hesitate to call our rooms on (08) 9388 3125 or email Reception@pglc.com.au.

Do I need a referral?

Yes. A valid referral from a GP or non-GP specialist is required for both consultations and endoscopy procedures. This is a Medicare requirement. If you don’t have a referral, your GP can organise one at your next appointment.

How much does a consultation cost?

Our rooms will provide a fee estimate when you book. As a private specialist, there is a gap fee above the Medicare rebate for consultations. All hospital based endoscopy procedures are provided gap free. Please check with your specific insurer regarding any excess you may need to pay for the admission. Please call reception on (08) 9388 3125 for current fee information.

How long will I wait for an appointment?

Wait times vary depending on the urgency of your referral. UIf your GP marks your referral as urgent, please let our reception team know when you call.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Please bring your referral letter, Medicare card, private health insurance details, a list of your current medications, and any recent blood tests, scans or specialist letters relevant to your condition.

When will I get the results of my endoscopy?

Preliminary findings (with photographs) are usually discussed with you in the recovery area before you are discharged. A full written report with any biopsy results (if taken) will be sent to your referring GP, usually within one to two weeks.

Dr Chin will also follow up with you if any significant findings require further discussion.

Will I need to have a consultation prior to an endoscopy?

Not necessarily if there is an appropriate indication on the referral. Dr Chin may elect to review you prior if there are any concerns regarding your health or appropriateness for the procedure.

Will any investigations be required prior to my consultation?

Dr Chin will personally review each referral and if required, request forms for any additional tests will usually be sent to you prior to better streamline and maximise the efficiency and quality of your consultation.

Is endoscopy safe

Endoscopy is a very safe and commonly performed procedure. As with any medical procedure there are small risks, which Dr Chin will discuss with you in detail prior to your procedure. The procedure is performed under sedation, so it is generally well tolerated.

Are telephone or video consultations available?

Yes - Dr Chin sees patients from all over Western Australia and remote consultations are available if requested.

What does a gastroenterologist do?

Gastroenterologists are medical physicians who focus on medical and endoscopic treatment of digestive/liver disorders, while surgeons step in when a condition requires an operation.

In many cases, these specialists work together to provide the right treatment at the right time.
