Gastroenterology

It can be daunting to navigate through the field of medicine as it can seem complicated and full of confusing medical jargon is used. In my day to day practice, I endeavour to communicate in the most straightforward manner to ensure that you have a clear understanding of your management plan.

Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine focused on the digestive system and its disorders.

Click the menus below to find out more about the various areas of gastroenterology

  • A branch of medicine that encompasses the diagnosis and management of abnormalities relating to the oesophagus (food pipe), stomach, small intestine, colon (large intestine) and rectum.

Common conditions include swallowing difficulties, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, constipation, reflux, gastritis, ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, inflammatory bowel disease, colon polyps and bowel cancer.

  • Hepatology is a subspecialty of medicine which encompasses the diagnosis, and management of liver diseases.

This includes assessment and management of abnormal liver tests, cancerous and non-cancerous liver growths and various causes of chronic liver disease (viral, alcohol, fatty liver, autoimmune).

Liver disease can be insidious and not cause symptoms until a late stage. It is therefore important to identify and modify risk factors early. Patients with advanced liver damage (a condition also known as cirrhosis) require long term follow up to ensure early detection of complications.

  • This is a field of Gastroenterology that encompasses problems relating to the pancreas, gallbladder and bile ducts (drainage pipes of the liver)

Common conditions include gallstones, pancreatitis (pancreatic inflammation), autoimmune conditions, infections and cancers.
